BBQ Gift Box Survival Kit

We feel there is a need for the perfect BBQ Survival kit for the grill master in your family. And while we have a great many items to choose from we think we have found the perfect combination of these 5 essential BBQ gift box items. (There are actually 6 items but it is not very easy shipping beer)

First off, your man has to look great standing over by the grill even if he is not doing anything. So a professional bespoke apron is essential. We also appreciate that it is often hot during the grilling season so an all leather apron, while very cool - is not cool and not a great idea. Better to rely on a tough cotton twill with just the right amount of style and lots of functionality. The handmade Grill Apron from Under NY Sky is our go-to favourite. The no-tie design is perfect for comfort and fit and makes it into our top 5 items for your BBQ gift box.

Of course your favourite butcher will be providing the meat for your feast but may we suggest an amazing sauce from our award winning neighbour Denzel. Denzel of is a local master at creating amazing hot sauces. His BBQ sauces have won the coveted Scovie Award ( National Fiery Foods & Barbecue Show). They are truly excellent and a go-to sauce for beef, pork and chicken when you need to kick it up a notch.

And of course for many grill masters these days the secret ingredient for a great steak is the perfect rub. We recommend the excellent Char Blue premium spice rub from Chef Jeffrey Young. It has a complex flavour that is delicious with a good cut of meat. These spices are ground in-house prior to blending which ensures freshness. We are delighted to feature this great rub in our BBQ gift box.

If time permits we have also included a 5 star BBQ sauce recipe for those who prefer the Kansas City style of sweeter BBQ sauces. This recipe comes from Meathead Goldwyn and is something to brag about. This delicious tomato based sauce can be made ahead of time and stored in your fridge. The recipe and instructions are listed below. According to Meathead it is perfectly acceptable BBQ etiquette to claim this sauce as your own and pretend it is an old family recipe. We've also added a basting brush to our BBQ Gift Box so you can slather this sauce liberally on your favourite meats.

The last item we feel is an essential upgrade. For too long men have had to rely on wimpy bottle and beer openers. We do not want to use a wine bottle opener for our beer. We want something that fits in our hand and doesn’t slip around when it is covered in sauce and grease. The solution is a beer opener that has a military knife grip handle. It should feel like there is a 6 inch full tang blade there but instead you open your beer with it. That is perfection, and we can guarantee your husband’s buddies will immediately say “That’s awesome - Where did you get that!” The answer is from Ka-Bar, one of the best Made in America Knife companies around and the fifth items in this years BBQ gift box.

Here is the breakdown and more details on our Beloved and Bespoke BBQ Gift Box for the man in your family.

They deciding factor for curating this apron is the no-tie straps. It is just super convenient to only have to clip the strap around your waist and have the apron held in place. The second critical issue is pockets and this apron has a great choice of pockets for thermometers, tongs, towels, sauces, bottle openers and of course beer.

The quality comes from Under NY Sky's excellent craftsmanship. Each apron features double stitched seams and reinforced leather patches. The brass metal hardware adds a whole lot of class and a great vintage look.

Here more details from the manufacturer;

HANDCRAFTED, DURABLE QUALITY – This apron is handmade with durable mid-weight 8 oz twill, reinforced with genuine leather patches, 100% cotton straps to avoid allergies and guarantee your comfort, and durable anti-rust vintage brass metal hardware, grommets and clasps, with anti-allergic Zamak coating for extra support. Double stitched utility pockets and thick top and bottom hems for strength and structure.

NO-TIE, EASY FASTENING DESIGN – This apron is perfect for those who don't like ties and bows: it comes with a clasp on one side of the waist strap and a ring on the other so you can fasten it in a snap. It's also designed with SPLIT-LEG with coverage going from chest to mid-shin – 27" wide x 36" tall (66 x 90 cm), and waist size from 25 up to 60 inches (64 - 153 cm), fully adjustable for unisex sizing.

PROFESSIONAL STYLE – This apron is true "work wear", fitting most bodies and activities, offering you great comfort, durability and functionality. It has clean design, with many utility pockets: easy access phone and pencil pockets on the front chest, and large hand pockets to fit all the tools and accessories that you need while BBQing that perfect steak. A sleek apron for a professional look.

WASH AND CARE – This apron is tough but easy to care for. Simply machine wash in cold with no bleach. Do not tumble dry. Warm iron reverse side, if needed. Wash it before using for the first time. Like any other cotton fabric, the first few times you wash your apron, you should wash it by itself to avoid any possible dye bleeding onto your other clothes.

RAW FABRIC, UNIQUE STYLE – Our aprons are handcrafted with raw fabric - a more sustainable material that lasts more because it hasn't gone through any industrial or chemical finish process. For that reason, it also has a bigger shrinkage rate  of 5% to 8% if it is washed in hot water or tumble dried. After weeks of wear and washes, natural marks may occur leaving your apron even more personal and unique, just like you.

Ka-Bar Ka-Barley

One great beer opener!

“Awesome tactical bottle opener. You can open bottles that require twist off, pop off, or pry off openings. Nothing stands between your finely crafted beer and your finely crafted tool. The Ka-Barley will help you slay the biggest IPA beers or the finest Belgian bubbles.”

If you reach for an opener why not experience the pure joy of military grade precision and tactical expertise. That is what you get with Ka-Bar’s knife inspired beer opener. Made of GFN-PA66, an extra-durable plastic material, and featuring the traditional KA-BAR® oval-shaped handle, the KA-BARLEY makes light work of prying off bottle caps.

For our man at the grill this is a tool to be proud of. It will soon become his favourite opener and take a priority position in his top pocket of his new Apron.

Denzel's Hot Sauces are simply superb.

Denzel's Hot Sauces have been winning national and international wards for decades. He has a gift for blending delicious fresh ingredients with just the right amount of heat.

He also know a thing or two about grilling, roasting and BBQ as a pit master with Rockin' Ronnie Grill. Their 12 hour slow roasted maple wood brisket is something to die for.

For our BBQ gift box we have selected the extremely popular Rootbeer BBQ sauce. This sauce is similar in style to a classic kansas style sauce  but with that rootbeer goodness to add a little zing.  Your kids and family will love the taste which is perfect for the grill. A great choice for those looking for something unique and different then your average store bought varieties.

Kansas City Style Sauce Recipe

Try this recipe from Meathead Goldwyn of and you'll never use the store bought stuff again.

Makes. 6 cups.

Takes. 45 minutes even if you take a phone call.

2 tablespoons American chili powder

1 teaspoon ground black pepper

2 teaspoons Morton's kosher salt

2 cups ketchup

1/2 cup yellow ballpark-style mustard

1/2 cup cider vinegar

1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce

1/4 cup lemon juice

1/4 cup steak sauce

1/4 cup dark molasses

1/4 to 3/4 cup honey (see note below)

1 teaspoon hot sauce

1 cup dark brown sugar (you can use light brown sugar if that's all you have)

3 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 medium onion, finely chopped

4 medium cloves of garlic, crushed or minced

Optional. If you are cooking indoors, or if your meat does not have a lot of smoke flavor, or if you just want more smoke flavor, you can add 1 teaspoon of liquid smoke.

About the vinegar. I like my sauce tart. Trust me, although it may taste tart from the bottle, it is perfect on meat. If you are not big on vinegar, cut it in half.

About the honey. The recipe above is to my taste but I have found that most people like it better if I add another 1/2 cup of honey for a total of 3/4 cups.

About the steak sauce. There are many different brands and they all have different flavor profiles, but what we want here is the meaty depth of savoriness that they call umami, so use whatever you have on hand.

About the hot sauce. A simple sauce like Tabasco is all you need. I like the chipotle flavored version.

About the oil. You may use butter or bacon fat for a bit more flavor, but keep in mind, they can get rancid with time, and they will likely shorten shelf life to about 1 week. Use a bottled vegetable oil and it can keep months.

Secret optional ingredient. Add 2 tablespoons of tamarind paste. This exotic ingredient isn't really that exotic. It shows up on the ingredient lists of a lot of great BBQ sauces. It has a sweet citrusy flavor and really amps up the sauce. If you can't find it in an Indian or Asian grocery, it is available online.

1) In a small bowl, mix the American chili powder, black pepper, and salt. In a large bowl, mix the ketchup, mustard, vinegar, Worcestershire, lemon juice, steak sauce, molasses, honey, hot sauce, and brown sugar. Mix them, but you don't have to mix thoroughly.

2) Over medium heat, warm the oil in a large saucepan. Add the onions and sauté until limp and translucent, about 5 minutes. Crush the garlic, add it, and cook for another minute. Add the dry spices and stir for about 2 minutes to extract their oil-soluble flavors. Add the wet ingredients. Simmer over medium heat for 15 minutes with the lid off to thicken it a bit.

3) Taste and adjust. Add more of anything that you want a little bit at a time. It may taste a bit vinegary at first, but that will be less obvious when you use it on meat. I recommend you run with my recipe the first time and then you can make it your own. Strain it if you don't want the chunks of onion and garlic. I like leaving them in, they give the sauce a home-made texture. You can use it immediately, but I think it's better when aged overnight. You can store it into clean bottles in the refrigerator for a month or two.

Keeps. Because it has a high acid and sugar content, it can keep for months in the refrigerator.

Well that’s the perfect BBQ gift box Survival kit. Apron, Spatula /tong combo tool, Great Sauce, a Rub and manly beer opener. We know from experience that each time he steps up to the grill he will be nodding his head and appreciating this thoughtful gift. Well done gifters! (or should that be medium rare?)
