Corporate Christmas Gifts for Clients and Staff

Split the list before you spend. What to send clients, staff, suppliers and realtors, and where the CRA limit sits.

Corporate Christmas Gifts for Clients and Staff

Corporate Christmas gifting fails in a specific and repeatable way. Someone is handed a budget and a spreadsheet in late November, buys the same thing for ninety people, and the gifts arrive as an obligation rather than a thank-you.

The fix is not spending more. It is deciding who you are actually thanking, and sending them something that was not chosen in a hurry.

Split the list before you spend anything

One budget, one gift, ninety recipients is the most common approach and the least effective. Almost every company is really sending to four different groups, and they want different things.

Group What works
Key clients and accounts Fewer gifts, higher value, a keepsake at the centre. This is where the budget should concentrate.
Wider client list A consistent mid-range box. Warm, local, not branded to the hilt.
Staff Identical across the team, and inside the CRA’s $500 annual limit for non-cash gifts.
Suppliers and referral partners Often forgotten, and often the cheapest goodwill a business can buy.

Splitting the list usually costs the same and lands twice as well, because the people who moved the needle for you get something that reflects it.

Client Christmas gifts

The rule for clients: the gift should feel personal, not promotional. A logo printed across the front turns a thank-you into a piece of marketing, and the recipient can tell.

Our strongest client gifts are built around something handmade, with the food and drink around it:

If you want your name on it without printing it on the box, a branded ribbon does the job quietly. We send a proof before anything goes into production.

Employee Christmas gifts, and the $500 rule

The Canada Revenue Agency lets you give an employee up to $500 a year in non-cash gifts and awards, including taxes, without it becoming a taxable benefit. Physical gifts qualify. Most gift cards do not, and cash never does.

That single rule is why curated boxes stay popular for staff Christmas gifting in Canada — no taxable benefit, no log to maintain, and something people actually keep. We have written the rule up properly, including the gift card trap, in are employee gifts taxable in Canada.

For the gifts themselves, keep them consistent across the team. A visibly different gift for one person creates a conversation nobody wants to have in January.

Realtors, brokerages and property managers

Christmas overlaps with closing season, and a client who just bought a house remembers what arrived that week. A keepsake beats a consumable when the gift marks a milestone — a handcrafted cribbage board or an engraved walnut charcuterie board stays in the new house.

Branding: how much is too much

There is a scale, and most companies land too far along it.

  1. No branding, handwritten card. Best for clients you want to keep.
  2. A branded ribbon or label. Your name is present, quietly. The sweet spot for most businesses.
  3. A branded box. Strong for volume sends and events, where the packaging is the first impression.
  4. Engraving on the item. Works when the item is good enough to keep — and better still when the engraving is the recipient’s name rather than your logo.

The general rule: the closer the relationship, the less branding it needs.

Start earlier than feels necessary

Branded packaging is proofed and produced before anything is packed. Custom woodwork is made to order. Address collection, if you are sending to individuals, takes longer than anyone plans for.

We have set out how far ahead to start, and what is still possible if you are already behind, in when to order corporate Christmas gifts.
